Day 38 - Issue 14

Genesis 12:1 NLT

The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.’

I recently met with my spiritual director. I found myself taking the time to explain the contrast of what I called ‘the sterile years’ with the fruitfulness I’d encountered on moving house. Both the sterility and the fruitfulness were gifts from the hand of God, since I was incapable of delivering either. It was certainly encouraging to be entering what first impressions suggested was to be a fruitful season.

We together reflected upon how in some seasons God hides you deep within himself since he desires to have time alone with you. And at other times it appears there is an irresistible series of God connections that take place with no effort or particular planning. I for one struggle with those seasons of hiddenness, as I did for the past seven years since Katey died. Yet without being so hidden I know that I would not have taken the time in deliberately seeking God and exploring the contemplative path, let alone making it my own preferred route.

Certainly in responding to God, it was to enter a land God showed us. When Mum pointed to the house on the screen of my computer, its location was somewhere neither Jayne nor I had ever heard of. Yet, God brought us here to respond to his call to be a writer working with a special focus on ageing in exploring spirituality and purpose.

Within each one of us there is this sense of call to become what somewhere we know we were created to be. We can’t do this alone. It is God’s spirit that stirs and the issues that call us. It is each one of us who determines if we have the courage to head towards a land not of our own choosing, but one crafted by the hands of the Divine; a land in which we can connect with that inner sense of purpose and see it realised by God’s grace.

QUESTION: Have you found that as the years have progressed you have become somewhat stuck in a rut?

PRAYER: Faithful Father, while you are never-changing you also make all things new. Please renew and remake me.
