The Government has been defeated over its plan to extend Sunday trading hours in England and Wales.
MPs voted 317 to 286 to scrap proposals put forward by Chancellor George Osborne in last year's summer Budget that would have extended Sunday trading hours beyond the current six hour limit.
The decision comes following a heated debate in the Commons in which the government's Communities Minister offered to amend the proposal to allow for a 'pilot scheme' to be run before full implementation of new hours.
