Parish magazine is simply the best

A parish magazine in the Anglican Diocese of Durham has been honoured for the way it communicates the Christian message.

Crosstalk, the magazine for St Giles’, St Mary’s Sherburn and St Cuthbert’s Shadforth, in Durham, won a Commendation, second prize, for its covers and a certificate of excellence, first prize, for the clarity of communicating the Christian message in the prizes awarded by the Association of Church Editors.

Crosstalk appears ten times a year and is edited by Ruth Thomas, Associate Priest at St Giles’.

Ruth said: ”I took up editorship in 2010, but its success and popularity has been due to the dedication and hard work of the small team of lay representatives from across the three churches who meet regularly to discuss and plan the content. The team see this as an important part of their parishes’ mission to the wider community, both city and village alike, as well as being a vital vehicle of communication for regular parishioners. Crosstalk was submitted for consideration in the hope that this would bring some good news to the North East, and the team was therefore delighted to have brought these two important national awards home to the Durham diocese."

The Revd Canon Dr Alan Bartlett, Vicar of St Giles’ and Priest in Charge of St Mary’s and St Cuthbert’s, said: “We were recognised for the clarity of the magazine in communicating the Christian message. I am chuffed to bits for the team who put it together because they do not have experience of working on magazines but what they produce certainly caught the judges’ eye.”
