Playing the part of Jesus

The passion play began nearly 400 years ago, when the black plague raged in many parts of Europe.

Villagers from Oberammergau promised God they would perform the story of Jesus every tenth year as long as no one was to die of the plague.

Their prayers were answered and in 1634 the first Passion Play took place.

The promise made to God has been kept until today and whilst the pandemic meant the 2020 the Passion Play had to be postponed - the 42nd Oberammergau Passion Play will now take place in 2022.

The village of Oberammergau is already preparing. Premier's Rachel Matthews spoke with Frederick Mayet.
