Failing care homes could face closure

A Christian elderly charity is welcome new rules that mean care homes in England not meeting standards could be put in special measures.

The Health Secretary has announce from October care homes will face "tough" new inspection regimes.

The scheme will be similar to the one regulating NHS Trusts.

Christian charity The Outlook Trust works with older people and said the new regulations were welcomed as long as they are implemented properly.

National Director Robin Rolls spoke on Premier's News Hour and said: "I think what we've got to do is make sure that if we are offering things that are going to benefit residents in care homes then they actually do that.

"What we don't want is another statistical exercise by the government where boxes need to be ticked."

The government has been facing pressure to do more to cut the number of failing care homes after recent scandals found by undercover reporters.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "There are still too many care homes that I wouldn't be happy to see my own parents or grandparents in.

"We have shown the special measures process works and care turn around poor-performing hospitals and we can do the same for adult social care."

In extreme cases a failing care home could be forced to close.

Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care Andrea Sutcliffe said she wouldn't be afraid to use that power.

"People who are using residential and home care services have the right to expect high quality, safe and compassionate care.

"I am determined that CQC will shine a spotlight on poor care and make it clear that abuse and neglect is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"Of course we want services to improve, but where standards are repeatedly falling short, we will call time on poor care." She said.
