Catholic League slams rapper Jay-Z's new video for church scene

One of America's leading Catholic organisations has criticised US rapper Jay-Z's new video, describing it as "gratuitous as well as exploitative".

Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League took to the group's website to comment on the star's video trailer for "Family Feud", which opened with Jay-Z walking into a church, hand-in-hand with his daughter Blue Ivy.

He raps 'Nobody wins when the family feuds' before his wife Beyonce, dressed in a Russian Orthodox inspired outfit, stands at the pulpit before hearing her husband of nearly nine years' confession.

While Donohue said the 30-second teaser video wasn't anti-Catholic, he was less than impressed by the message.

Describing the scene he said: "...a flashback scene where he [Jay-Z] is shown kissing a gal in her undergarments... then Beyoncé appears, standing at the pulpit, wearing a navy blue outfit dressed like a queen…she is a priestess.

"Is it anti-Catholic? No, it is not a bigoted assault. Indeed, it pales next to Jay-Z's relentlessly racist (and anti-black) lyrics.

"But it is nonetheless gratuitous as well as exploitative, just the kind of thing we would expect from this genius couple."

The nearly 8-minute long full-length video, which was released exclusively on the '99 Problems' streaming service Tidal was directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ava DuVernay and also features actors Michael B. Jordan and Thandie Newton.
