The pope has met a dog credited with rescuing a four-year-old year girl from the rubble of an Italian earthquake.

Rescue dog, Leo, found Giorgia in rubble in town of Pescara del Tronto, she was the last person to be found alive.

Her nine-year-old sister died when the 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit Italy on August 24th.

The girls were found side-by-side in the rubble.

Pope Francis met the black Labrador at the Vatican along with his police handlers and the volunteers who helped pull survivors from the rubble.

The pope petted the dog and was given a police hat as a present.

The death toll from the central Italy quake reached 295 people.
