Pope Francis will show solidarity with people affected by the communist regime when he visits Albania later this month.

The pontiff is to visit the country on 21st September during his first European trip outside Italy.

He will pay tribute to everyone who suffered before the country’s communist government fell in 1992.

During his trip, the Holy Father will also stress the importance of interfaith relations.

Albania is a majority Muslim country, but there is a significant Christian minority.

Pope Francis will also celebrate mass in Mother Teresa Square, Tirana, in honour of the Catholic nun who was born in Albania but spent most of her life in India.

The details of the visit were confirmed during a Vatican press conference.
