Is that you God?

Hopefully you don’t subscribe to the view that leadership is all about receiving instructions from God, like Moses received the Ten Commandments. Christian leadership is typically to be plural and consultative.

There may be times when God gives an individual a particular vision of course, but the New Testament Christianity is a million miles from the ‘Moses on the mountain’ experience that which was special for a different day and generation.

But does this mean that you never expect to hear from God? Are we assuming that your experience, and maybe shared wisdom from your co-leaders is going to be all that you need?

For many years I believed that if you want to know what God says, then you go to the Bible: God’s current address for messages, and you shouldn’t expect a whole lot more. If you believe that you are hearing from God, it is probably time to see a shrink.

But thankfully that period in my life did not last too long. I kept meeting people who had heard from God outside of Scripture, and their insights seemed utterly God-given. I also found that the Bible itself suggested that not only was it possible to hear from God – it was utterly consistent with a God who speaks. Why would he confine Himself to words he inspired within a particular time frame and a particular culture, when He by His Spirit indwells all who have faith in Christ?

Stuart Glassborow and Ed King have been on a journey in hearing God with their church, Catch the Fire London, and share their wisdom on show 350 of The Leadership File.

They share a method which is very simple; indeed Stu was amazed that it could be that simple. We are to be open, focused on God and trust him to so influence our thinking that we know what he is saying. In the show Stu and Ed outline the four step process. So if you have adopted the view that hearing God is as tricky as the Times crossword - only for a specialist few with the insight and persistence, you will be amazed at how easy it can be. Chances are God has been speaking far for more often than we ever imagined.

Convinced? Well let’s just suppose for a moment that you believe that God only speaks through His Word. This means there are a whole pile of things that the Word does not speak about, and so you have to make up your own mind about, informed by the principles in Scripture, if they indeed apply.

For example, where should you live? What job should you take? Should you marry, and if so whom? If you are looking for Bible verses you would have to live in the Middle East, taking a job known in Bible times. You are going to have to figure it out.

God has given us minds and expects us to be wise. But say he does speak today and has ideas, or approaches that you need.

Why not ask God to speak to you? Ask him questions and see what thoughts come into your mind. What do you have to lose?

If it’s just your thoughts, well you have lost nothing, because you were needing to make a decision anyway. But if God does speak, you have now opened yourself up to influence from the God of the universe.

As you read this is it just possible that you are about to enjoy some revelation that will open up your next visit, sermon, or key decision in ways that you had never dreamed of. You are only a prayer away. Are you willing to give it a go?
