On this day for centuries Christians have received a cross of ashes on the face as a reminder of their mortal failings and an invitation to receive God’s forgiveness.
To help us mark this day Premier’s Northern Correspondent Ian Britton has been to meet the Right Reverend Paul Butler, Bishop Of Durham.
