It’s inspired photographers, painters and even TV architect George Clarke.

He shared with Premiers Northern Correspondent Ian Britton how Durham Cathedral inspired him to become an architect during a visit to Durham to open the new Cathedral Room at Durham Station.

George Clarke told Premier, “It is always a thrill to be back in Durham. A childhood visit to the Cathedral and its splendid architecture is what inspired me to become an architect.  The views of Durham Cathedral are spectacular from the train station, and I am sure the room will become a well-used community asset.  The Cathedral dominates the city’s skyline and I know it will continue to inspire generations to come.”

There was a short ceremony and blessing of the room by the Dean of Durham, The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, accompanied by some of Durham Cathedral’s Choristers.

The Cathedral Room, looks out onto Durham Cathedral, and can be booked free of charge for meetings or events as part of Virgin Trains’ commitment to support the local communities in which it operates.

Premiers Northern Correspondent Ian Britton took a trip down the line to Durham for the opening and you can listen to his report below.
