It took place on Thursday 8th December at 6pm in Durham City Market Place. Three camels and a donkey arrived in Durham to join with members of local churches and community groups in telling the Christmas Story.
St Nicholas Church and Durham BID wanted to find a way of bringing a spectacular, family friendly re telling of the Christmas Story to help everyone celebrate Christmas.
The script had been written by local people and included various local references. Music was provided by a choir made up of members of local churches and supported by the University Gospel Choir and included a rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus and carols for all to join in. The actors also came from local churches and community groups, all are giving their time freely. The Three Wise Men processed into the Market Place on camels and Mary and Joseph were accompanied by a donkey. The action took place around three stages in the Market Square and everyone was invited into St Nic’s afterward for free hot chocolate and the opportunity to say a prayer or light a candle.
Adam Deathe, business engagement manager at Durham BID, said: “The live nativity always provides great free family entertainment for everyone to enjoy. It was exciting to see the nativity brought to life, reminding us all of the meaning of Christmas whilst making Durham City even more enchanting and magical at this special time of year.”
The Revd Joanne Thorns, said: “The Durham City Nativity is an unique opportunity to witness our local community coming together to help us be part of the Christmas Story as it unfolds in a different, unusual setting in the heart of the city. It remind us that Jesus came into our ordinary everyday world and I hope it adds even more excitement and anticipation to Christmastime this year. We are inviting everyone to join us in a busy town and follow the signs with the Shepherds, Angels and Wise Men to find a very special baby. ‘
