The Exhibition will showcase the great creative, cultural and design sectors in the city and across the whole of the North of England.
The Revd Paul Revill, Regional Minister for the Northern Baptist Association, told Premier “We are delighted that the Great Exhibition of the North has been awarded to Newcastle and Gateshead for 2018. This provides a significant opportunity for the region to showcase its artistic and cultural talent to the nation and the wider world, and I look forward to our Baptist churches in the Tyneside area finding creative and energetic ways of being part of this project.”
Plans for the event include three walking circuits around Tyneside focusing on arts, design and innovation; a major exhibition hub at Great North Museum: Hancock; an innovative programme of new artistic and creative commissions; an entertaining and informative summer camp at Exhibition Park for families and an extensive learning programme.
The Revd David Herbert, Moderator of the United Reformed Church’s Northern Synod was also thrilled to hear the news. He told Premier “From the cradle of Christianity to the crucible of the industrial revolution the image of there being a fire in the north is branded into our region’s identity; so it feels particularly appropriate that the Great North Exhibition to be held in Newcastle-Gateshead will be entitled ‘The Blazing World – the fires of invention.’ With an envisaged 3 million extra visitors to our region to see the past and contemporary achievements in science, engineering, art and design showcased, I trust our whole community will be affirmed and filled with hope as we build on the best of our heritage in the present and look to the future. The whole of the North of England will be able to celebrate innovation and energy, and I think that this will rightly involve all sectors: public, private and community; and of course, I believe that as churches we will have unique and special parts to play across the whole scope of the Exhibition. The Great North Exhibition will affirm and encourage the dynamic enterprise to be found across the North of England, and underline our confidence in a future filled with hope and possibility.”
The Great Exhibition of the North will take place in Summer 2018 and will celebrate the creativity of Northern England, help boost investment and tourism in the region and leave a lasting cultural legacy.
