Ian is originally from London, studied Chemical Engineering at Exeter University and taught in London, whilst singing at St Albans Cathedral as a lay clerk, before achieving his position at Salisbury Cathedral School.  He is a conductor, singer, organist and composer, playing an active role in the musical life of the wider Salisbury community as well as teaching at the school.  He has compositions published by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM).  He moves to Durham along with his wife Elizabeth. Their son Joseph, takes up the post of Assistant Organist at Truro Cathedral in September, and their daughter Rosanna, who has just completed her A Levels at Lancing College, hopes to read Classics at Durham University.

On his appointment Ian Wicks says, “I am honoured to have been appointed Headmaster of The Chorister School in Durham. I look forward to working collaboratively with the children, staff, parents, governors and the whole Cathedral community to build upon the excellence I have already seen in the school.”

“I feel a strong affinity to Choir Schools and understand their special atmosphere and ethos, and I enjoy the close link that these schools have with their cathedral. Elizabeth and I are excited to be moving to Durham, being part of the Cathedral College community, and exploring the beautiful countryside of the wider North-East region.”

Ian succeeds Yvette Day who is leaving to be Headmistress of King’s College School, Cambridge, starting her new position in January 2018.

Canon David Kennedy, Vice-Dean of Durham Cathedral and Custos of The Chorister School says, “We look forward to welcoming Ian to the School and the Cathedral community.  His appointment marks an exciting new phase in the life of the School and Durham Cathedral, building on the strong foundation of Yvette Day, ahead of her departure to King’s College School, Cambridge.”

“Yvette will be sorely missed but Ian’s arrival will be the start of a new chapter in the life of the School which in 2016 celebrated its 600th anniversary.”

David Halls, Director of Music, Salisbury Cathedral says, “My colleagues and I at Salisbury Cathedral are delighted about the news of Ian Wicks’ appointment to The Chorister School at Durham. Over the years Ian has taken a full and active part in the life of Salisbury Cathedral and his contribution to its music programme in particular has been invaluable. We wish him every success in the North East.”
