In August 1878 two young “Hallelujah lasses”, Louise Agar and Elizabeth Jackson, were ordered by William Booth to “open fire” in Consett.

The carol singers included the Ripon Cathedral boy choristers, the cathedral youth choir, along with school choirs from across the town.
The Dean of Ripon, the Very Rev John Dobson said: “Despite the best efforts of the winter weather to dampen spirits, those who came to hear the various choirs on Thursday certainly had their spirits raised.”
“The cathedral choir enjoyed getting out their cloaks and processing up to the Market Square to bring some festive cheer.”
Premier’s Northern Correspondent Ian Britton went along to the event and spoke with Dean John and the Cathedrals Music Outreach Co-ordinator Tracey Kendrick.
