For many holiday hunger is a real problem for families who normally receive free school meals.
Premier’s Northern Correspondent Ian Britton has been to visit The Cross Cafe in St Michael’s Centre, a church run community café in the East end of Newcastle.
They are offering hot freshly cooked meals for children for just 50p and adults £1.
They source food from businesses that would otherwise send it to waste, which allows them to be affordable and help to prevent edible food being thrown away.
