The Jesus Doors

The project is a collaboration between the vicar, Revd Canon Andrea Jones and liturgical artist-in-residence Ali Hutchison, who together discovered that doors were a common theme in their visual expression of faith.   The church has a permanent installation of four huge doors painted in three-dimensional form by renowned mural artist Walter Kershaw. These inspired the artist who was already working on her own project called The Jesus Doors, to create a new Stations of the Cross series using her favoured supports; appropriately also doors.  The paintings use mixed-media including acrylic washes and charcoal and a lot of splashing and rubbing back.

The artist has used traditional images alongside symbols as up-to-date as a kiss emoji to represent Judas in the garden of Gethsemane.  Shrugging Sanhedrin priests and an overweight Herod come to life, the women of Jerusalem’s lament is palpable and there is quite a bit of ‘blood’ from Jesus’ torture and beatings; but mirroring the Biblical account, resurrection is also a certain hope in the form of a fifteenth door waiting in the wings to be unveiled on Easter morning.

The art exhibition is open at various times right up to Ascension Day
