Christopher Lowson has become one of the 26 ‘Lords Spiritual’ – a group of Bishops in the Second chamber of parliament.

He was formally introduced by two Bishops who ‘overtook’ him in the queue to join the House of Lords to achieve a gender balance.

He presented his Writ of Summons – a formal piece of paper allowing him to join the Lords – and then took the parliamentary oath, swearing allegiance to the Queen.

Bishop of Gloucester, Rt Rev Rachel Treweek and Bishop of Newcastle, Rt Rev Christine Hardman led a cheerful Bishop Lowson to his seat and sat either side of him.

The Bishop smiled and shook hands with the people around him.

The Bishop of Lincoln has been formally welcomed into the House of Lords.
