Faith and doubt

It is time to wrap things up on the recent teachings and summarise the summary. In terms of the theme of the book that supplied the material for these articles – how the Church lost the Truth – it boils down to the roots of the agenda that informs your personal faith. There was hate, error and apathy but, above all, there was doubt.

99.9 percent of this book has been written to show you how the Church lost the Truth. So where’s the good news? You did entice us with the by-line … and how it can find it again, after all. There’s a short answer and a long answer to this.

The short answer is that if Truth is being lost, then the best way of finding it again is to lean towards faith and away from doubt. Start to truly believe in the Bible as the repository for Truth, not as the raw material for a good argument. The best way to attack doubt is to stop doing it and start to believe, by taking that step into the unknown and trust in the divine Person, who has authored the Bible. This is not easy, particularly if the inbred rationalism of the Greek mindset is telling you to question everything you may read in God’s Word. Surely I can’t take this at face value? Surely He didn’t really say this? Surely I can’t trust this text? Surely not everything in the Bible is true? Surely I can’t always trust in God? Surely I can’t necessarily believe in God?

This is a progressively downwards spiral, and at every point is driven by Greek philosophy, whether it is scepticism or deductive logic or dualism or whatever. You are asking me to believe something that I have no evidence for or no experience to draw on or no quantifiable proofs for?

You are totally right … that’s what faith is!

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1)

If this is you, if you feel that God is speaking to you in any way, then its time to talk to Him, one to One.

If you want a longer answer, then you need to go deeper and enter into an ongoing dialogue with God Himself, allowing Him to illuminate his written Word for you. This is not going to happen overnight, it requires patience and perseverance from both of you, though one party has this in limitless abundance. You should be prepared for an amazing journey of discovery, guided by firm unseen hands, rather than floating aimlessly on a sea of opinion, theory and tradition. And this journey into the heart and mind of God starts with a single step … onto your knees in prayer. Here are some words that you can use.

Father God, you have provided us with the Way and the Truth for us, yet many who have professed to follow You have made it so difficult for the rest of us to really follow you. Please release me from all that clutters, confuses and deceives and guide me into Your Word, the Bible, so that I can become a true person of faith and a witness for You in a World that does not understand you but needs you desparately. Amen.
