The Plan – part 1

Now for an example, that demonstrates the consequence of our collective dullness. Alice Bailey was an influential teacher in the early part of the 20th Century. She was hugely influential in the circles in which she moved, which unfortunately weren’t nice places. This was because she was a theosophist, heavily into the occult and her writings were mainly of a “spiritual” nature and in fact, she claims that her key thoughts were dictated to her by a “Master of Wisdom”, nothing less than a demonic being. Her abiding aim was to see a “unified” society governed by a “world religion”. She was one of the main forerunners of what we now call the New Age movement.

In 1948 she unleashed a ten point plan, designed to wrench society away from its Christian roots. These points were so “far out” as to be unthinkable at the time – but reading them now is to see a description of where our world is in the UK and the West. It is also a huge indictment of the modern Church.

POINT #1: TAKE GOD AND PRAYER OUT OF THE EDUCATION SYSTEM

Even as someone brought up outside the Christian tradition I can recite the Lord’s Prayer because it was recited at morning assembly every day at school. Not now though. Prayer in public schools is banned in the USA. In the UK you are allowed collective worship, but there’s no stipulation that it has to be the Christian God and 80% of secondary schools don’t do daily worship anyway.

POINT #2: REDUCE PARENTAL AUTHORITY OVER THE CHILDREN

Bailey’s intention was to “break the communication between parent and child.”  If kids are not going to hear about God at school, then it’s vital that parents teach their children godly ways. Not so any more. Firstly, most parents live outside of the Christian tradition now, so have nothing to teach and, secondly, with the breakdown of the traditional family structure (biological parents, one from each sex), there’s been a lessening of parental authority anyway, with kids more likely to see celebrities and internet acquaintances as authority figures.

‘Do not withhold correction from a child, for if you punish them with a rod, they will not die. Punish them with the rod and save them from death.’ (Proverbs 23: 13-14)

Carry this out in today’s society and you’re in deep trouble. Parental (and school) discipline is out of the question these days, with the current child protection laws and charters for children’s rights.

POINT #3: DESTROY THE TRADITIONAL JUDEO-CHRISTIAN FAMILY STRUCTURE

Bailey said: “Liberate the people from the confines of this structure. It is oppressive and the family is the core of the nation. If you break the family, you break the nation.”

Our media is hardly family-friendly, with the promotion of sexual promiscuity and alternative lifestyles. Kids are losing their childhoods and encouraged to grow up too fast. My childhood was full of simple pleasures – board games, conkers and running amok in the streets. Now it’s 18-certificate video games, sexting on mobile phones and fashion tips from multi-billion pound celebrity marketing empires.

Family, from Adam and Eve to Monica (wifey) and Steve, is God’s plan for us to have good abundant lives within boundaries. It is under attack like never before.

POINT #4: MAKE ABORTION LEGAL AND MAKE IT EASY

She said: “Build clinics for abortion and put health clinics in schools. If people are going to enjoy the joy of sexual relationships, they need to be free of unnecessary fears. In other words, they should not be hampered by unwanted pregnancies and diseases.”
Abortions have been legal in the UK since 1967. An unborn child can now legally have its life terminated at 24 weeks (just under 6 months). A recent poll had 37% of women strongly agreeing to having right of access to abortion, with only 12% strongly disagreeing. So 3 out of 4 women are strongly in favour of easy abortions.

It’s a symptom of our individualistic society that personal needs rule over everything and let’s not think too much about the sacrifices made by others (such as the unseen human being in the mother’s womb) to keep this going.

POINT #5: MAKE DIVORCE EASY AND LEGAL, FREE PEOPLE FROM THE CONCEPT OF MARRIAGE FOR LIFE.

When the Barna Group in 2008 were surveying American divorce rates they noticed that the divorce figure for Christians is statistically identical to that of non-Christians: 32% versus 33%, respectively.

It’s bad enough that marriage in society has fallen to a low, but … among Christians! It’s inexcusable. Notwithstanding the situations where divorce is inevitable and advisable, if divorce is taken lightly it makes a mockery of the serious vows we make before God when we tie the knot:

I take you to be my wife (or husband), to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God’s holy law. In the presence of God I make this vow.

OK, it probably means little to non-Christians. But Christian divorce involves breaking a sacred vow before God. It obviously doesn’t bother those married Christians who see divorce as a ‘quick fix’ for a situation that perhaps could be worked through prayerfully!

Then next ten points next week …
