A shocking picture of a little boy, drowned and washed up on the Turkish shore, took the planet by storm and brought the refugee crisis into full focus on the front pages of newspapers around the world.

The stories of boats sinking and men, women and children dying haven’t been ignored, but no other image or story than the one of Aylan Kurdi have caused such a stir.

Loretta chats to Darren Schreiber, senior lecturer at Exeter University, about the power of imagery and how this harrowing image has tugged at our heart strings, but yet thousands of refugees remain just as numbers.
