What do you do when you find out that your child is watching porn?
You’d be surprised to learn that children as young as 11 are viewing it. By time they get to 16 years old 65% of youngsters have viewed porn in some way. And it isn’t just boys – yes girls are too.
Unfettered access to smart phones, tablets and laptops has created a generation of digital natives whose knowledge is equal only to the ignorance of their parents’ and grandparents’ generations: adults who don’t understand how technology work give children unlimited access to devices; often only talking about technology when asking their children to instruct them on using a new phone. Younger and younger children are gaining access to the digital space, many expertly able to navigate an iPad before they can write their name, or in some cases, before they can walk.
NATALIE COLLINS is the Director of the Day Programme, which helps people navigate the pressures of modern life. She says that as Christians we may not feel uncomfortable about drawing children’s attention to sexual content too early. It can feel that we are destroying their innocence. However, she tells Premier’s Lisa Mainwaring on the Woman to Woman show that ‘innocence is not the same as ignorance’.
