Be Still Know

Exodus 20:1 NLT

Then God gave the people all these instructions:

How can I ever know what it is that God requires of me? The Israelites journeying in the wilderness arrive at the foot of Mount Sinai. They have discovered through observation and experience that God responds to need when they cry out, even if their cry is no more than a complaint. None of them can be in any doubt that God is real and chooses to intervene directly in human affairs. However, now they are to discover that there are rules to this special relationship; rules that will be presented to Moses on Mount Sinai.

In following God, each of us is invited to seek him individually through the spirit of God within us. Yet, God has also established a pattern of walking in his Way, which been established through scripture and the historic teachings of the Church. There is a moral, ethical and sacramental form for our discipleship. This code or Rule is now gifted to the Israelites in the heart of their wilderness experience and is in a precondition for their eventual entry into the Promised Land. There can be no ordered life of worship and service outside of God’s code.

Our walk of faithfulness is therefore both individual, in that we are to seek and know God ourselves, as well as communal, in that we are to demonstrate a coherent community Rule as gifted by God.

Such a Rule influences the life of the community, as well as each individual within that community, and also determines how that community interacts with the wider culture. To this end, God establishes a people who individually and together reveal his character and purpose throughout the earth, as Jesus once did in his incarnate self.

Your personal choices, together with the way you participate in a communal expression of the will of God, impact the world into which you sow gospel seed as commanded by Christ, as well as impact your own health and development as a disciple of Jesus.

QUESTION: What are your responses to the idea of an individual and a communal expression to your faith?

PRAYER: Lord, may your Church all over the world honour your name in obedience to your word
