Psalm 27:8 NLT
My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”
The face of God is a cause of some confusion to me. Scripture reveals that Moses spoke with God face-to-face (Exodus 33:11). Yet the same scripture records God tell the same Moses no one can see the face of God and live (Exodus 33:20). This is a paradox, two apparently contradictory statements, yet the psalmist summons us to seek God’s face. While the search is on, is its objective possible?
I first encountered this psalm as a new Christian. It took hold of me then and has resonated down the years. It has inspired me to engage in that search. For many years I stumbled around its invitation, with varying degrees of commitment. Once invited into the adventure triggered by Katey’s diagnosis with MS, that search became more intentional. I slowly came to realise that ‘face’ means many aspects. For example, my face can convey welcome, anger, confusion, tiredness, and a host of different emotions. My face is recognisable as in a photo. Yet its expression is what those who meet me first encounter.
So it is with God. A face that is neither static nor iconic. It expresses love, empathy, anger judgement, frustration. It is a feature of a God intimately connected with a world crafted by God’s own hand. So as I approach God through whichever method of prayer, meditation or contemplation I choose, I gain a sense of the expression God carries in response to my search – sometimes something of a surprise, for it appears God is quizzical. A mild and amused puzzlement at my angst, my decision-taking, ‘me’ in general. Perhaps the most liberating discovery is that God is ready to accompany me in everything. Most encouragingly, when I have little understanding of where I’m standing and where I’m headed.
So I talk with God face-to-face. Yet, I can never see God’s actual face which, by virtue of divinity, mirrors the myriad questions of our worried world. It is comforting to know that God is there for me. Reassuring that God is also there for all of us.
QUESTION: How seriously do you seek God’s face?
PRAYER: Lord, when you call me, I want my reply to be, “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.”
