Be Still Know

Hebrews 11:1 NLT

“Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.”

My greatest heart-searching is never in celebrating those things that have gone well. No; I find I get caught up in picking over the remains of those things that have gone badly for me. I move from anger with an inflated sense of personal injustice, to relief that the difficult situation is at an end, to regrets that it has had to end at all. I am, in fact, often a complete emotional roller coaster, and my nearest and dearest have frequently had to endure my rants expressing all these jumbled feelings.

We are called to live with our eyes focused upon the road ahead rather than staring into the rear-view mirror. When we only ever look backwards, and define ourselves by our regrets, we fail to navigate the road ahead and will most certainly crash again and again.

The writer to the Hebrews invites us to live by faith, where faith is always trusting in God’s provision for tomorrow. Our ability to trust God with our future is seriously impaired when we can only live in what has been. My wife Jayne experienced some serious bullying at school. It made a deep impact at the time and has exerted a long shadow over her life. Even today, her instinctive reaction can be to hear a criticism or an insult where none was intended. History has a habit of determining our present and our future if we fail to challenge it.

However, the decision we make to follow Christ is, in fact, a moment of re-birth. It is a deliberate repentance, or change of mind; we have a brand-new start. The past is truly dealt with and behind us and we have a bright new tomorrow; every day! As someone who now chooses to live by faith, we can rest in the reality that tomorrow is safely entrusted to the One who created us and knows us best.

QUESTION: Where are your eyes focused? On the road ahead or on the rear-view mirror?

PRAYER: Lord, I do not know what the future holds, but I do know that with you there is hope. Help me lead a hope-filled life.
