Be Still Know
Exodus 32:18 NLT
But Moses replied, ‘No, it’s not a shout of victory nor the wailing of defeat. I hear the sound of a celebration.’
One of my challenges throughout school life and on into my university years was my lack of staying power. While I enjoyed my studies, I could never resist the opportunity to break off and socialise. Any opportunity to take a walk, join in a game of football or simply go for a coffee and I ditched my books and went. The issue was that I was easily distracted, and I had a high level of commitment to my own personal pleasure. Only as I lived life did I come to realise that I needed to face up to certain challenges that I wanted to avoid, and that partying was often only to postpone reality rather than avoid it.
And so it was for the Israelites as they partied around the golden calf. When Moses returned from the mountain he rightly predicted that the Israelites were partying. They of course felt they were worshipping. Yet, God had presented Moses with the Law and ordinances that prescribed the life of worship, and it was shattered in the face of the alternative worship Aaron had created.
The business of following Jesus, while always intended to involve the characteristic of joy, can at times feel like hard work. God is not some off-the-shelf pain relief medication to make life feel better. We are invited to discover the reality of God as the creator and sustainer of our world, and learn how we might individually and collaboratively make sense of God’s Rule for living in everyday life.
The history of the Church reveals that remaining consistent and faithful to the worship of
God and the walk of faith is a challenging one. There are innumerable records of spontaneous movements that emerged with vigour, only to fade from the pages of history in a short space of time. It is good to consider the ancient ways as pioneered by the Fathers of the Church as we seek to remain faithful and pass the torch of witness and worship to the emerging generations.
QUESTION: How do you respond to the Rule and ordinances of God?
PRAYER: Lord God, may your Church be faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ, whatever the cost or the challenges.
