Be Still Know
Jeremiah 17:5 NLT
‘This is what the Lord says: ‘Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord.’
Recently, while leading a prayer session for a small group, as an exercise we imagined we were trees. We reflected upon the cycle of the seasons, the dormant winter period when branches were bare, a stark deathly shape against overcast skies. Being subject to the season, no matter what the tree chose, it was unable to change its condition.
We stood and raised our arms above our heads and reached for the roof, straining every muscle attempting to stretch to the limit of our reach. Then we slowly lowered our arms in in an arc until they rested at our sides, all the time continuing to stretch to the utmost limit. We reflected upon the finite nature of our reach. No matter how hard we strained, we were unable to add one single additional centimetre to our reach. In the same way, the tree endures winter’s icy blasts without in any way being able to bring forward the springtime with early bud, leaf and blossom.
In pressing circumstances I easily doubt God’s provision. I feel alone and stripped of all that affords any semblance of the fruit of God within my life. While the season of winter is at times unendurable, I note that I can do nothing to speed up the arrival of springtime. Seasons are finite; they run their course and may not be short circuited. But spring and summer will come, for God’s intention is that I flourish, a message embedded throughout nature.
My attempts to spread my canopy in my own strength as I stretch my arms out to their limits merely reinforces how real such limits are. I acknowledge that my flesh, my humanity must pass through the seasons of God’s choosing in enabling me to present a harvest seeded deep within me from conception by the grace of God.
QUESTION: How much do you struggle against things you cannot control?
PRAYER: Sovereign Father, help me to wait patiently for you during hard seasons of life.
