Be Still Know

Psalm 63:3 NLT

Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you!

Commitment is a remarkable gift, and one that is often only valued once it has been lost. When we make a commitment, we gift everything of ourselves to the one, or the situation, where we have committed ourselves. I remember how Katey, as she deteriorated with MS, requested a copy of the traditional wedding vows we had reverently addressed to each other. Once she had them, she forcefully reminded me that just as I was self-evidently committed to her in her sickness, so she required the opportunity to be committed to me in my health. One set of circumstances didn’t trump the other. A very loving statement and one that reflects God’s love for us, and indeed our love for God.

When we use the word ‘commitment’ in faith terms, it is almost always referring to our faithful commitment to God. I guess it’s because we know that we wobble and that our fractured humanity so often creates failure in our intentional discipleship. Here the psalmist speaks of how God’s commitment is better than life! Certainly Katey and I discovered this on our walk of pain – that somehow God showed up again and again. He was our forever friend, and although I know Katey would have desired a different life in many ways, yet God was so present in her brokenness that she shone with the spirit’s radiance.

You are a wonderfully created and unique individual who God loves. You are also an integral part, a living stone, as Peter says, of God’s global Church, His bride for whom He will return one day. Therefore, God’s commitment to you is expressed personally and communally as the kingdom of God breaks in. God is committed to your welfare and growth as a disciple in private and in community – make sure, if you are able, that you respond to God’s commitment in both spheres.

QUESTION: You might reflect upon your commitment to God. However, have you reflected upon his commitment to you?

PRAYER: Faithful Lord, your never-ending, never-breaking, never-failing love is so precious to me. Thank you.
