Be Still Know

John 14:2 NLT

‘There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?’

In 1990 I travelled to a charismatic leaders’ conference held in East Berlin, just months after the wall had come down. Having bought maps of Berlin which included all the bus and tram routes, I assumed I could very simply make my way from the airport to the conference venue on what I’ve always found excellent public transport systems on the continent. Well, be assured there was nothing wrong with the transport. However, my own grasp of German was minimal and it was all a lot more confusing than I had anticipated.

Life can be confusing. Scripture provides us with an excellent map, yet navigating our mortal journey can prove challenging. Fortunately, Jesus has gone ahead of us. Not only did Jesus encounter life in exactly the same way we do, yet when faced with temptation, unlike us, he refused to sin. He also restored relationship with the Father so we are invited to become friends of God, and co-heirs with Christ. Finally Jesus ascended to heaven and has gone ahead to prepare a place for us while we await his glorious return.

The grace of God always flows towards us, creating the opportunity for each one of us to find our way to God. It may require a number of changes en route, yet God reaches out to us. It is then by grace that we freely accept God’s invitation and follow him. We choose to cooperate with God.

My job is to keep the faith – whether I’m searching for a conference centre in an unfamiliar city or if I’m journeying towards the city of God. God has called me to himself, my one job is to cooperate with him in the task of preparing me for my ultimate destiny, eternal relationship with him. Jesus has gone ahead and is preparing that destiny; my responsibility is to keep the faith, nurtured and nourished by the Holy Spirit.

QUESTION: What is it that prevents you from cooperating with God?

PRAYER: Lord God, you are my light, my path, my guide, my way. Help me to follow where you lead today.
