Be Still Know
John 12:26 NLT
‘Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honour anyone who serves me.’
I’m an enthusiast. I find it easy to become so involved with the task that I lose sight of the original purpose. The participating is everything to me, it means I have little concern over winning or losing. I know that in my many years of playing very mediocre cricket, I never really felt motivated by the win/lose outcome. For me it was performing to my very best and being part of a team experience. I am very experience-orientated.
Jesus says that in fact it is the participating that matters more than any objective outcome. Yet, the Christian landscape is populated with well-intentioned projects and events, each seemingly bringing in the kingdom, yet those involved live under immense stress and find so very little time for prayerful reflection. Following Jesus is the measure of our service. It is not a question of knowledge or activity. It’s remaining in close proximity. One clear way this is achieved is by taking time out to contemplate Christ.
Many tell me that they find time set aside for God as merely a source for distraction and that they are unable to fight against a mind that strays in every direction. As with every endeavour, including cricket, practice matters. Performance is related to practice and it’s no different with pursuing God. I must begin a process of exploring contemplative prayer if I am to stand any chance of following Jesus through life’s many twists and turns.
For long periods of my life I have enjoyed activities and invested in things that are some distance from the values Jesus invites me to espouse. At such moments I have felt distant from God; now I know the reason why. Jesus invites you and me to spend time in his presence.
QUESTION: What steps might you take to ensure you are walking closely with God every moment of every day?
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, I do want to serve you because I want to be with you.
