John 12:24 NLT
I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels – a plentiful harvest of new lives.
One feature of the new home we shall be sharing is that it has a large back garden. For this urban boy it presents something of a challenge. I’m used to small paved yards with perhaps a few pots of decorative flowers and herbs for my cooking. Now I have lawn, fruit trees, shrubs and tall hedges. Peter at the local garden centre has proved helpful. Now armed with a lawnmower and hedge trimmer, I stand ready for action!
It’s perhaps the weight of this new gardening task weighing upon my mind that means I find myself considering Jesus’ words about ears of wheat. In itself an ear of wheat is a success. It is part of a successful crop and can serve the interests of others through being harvested and ground into flour. Yet, Jesus invites that kernel to fall into the ground and to die that it might reproduce many times its current value.
Leaving our home of 18 years, steeped in the memories of caring for Katey, seeing community emerge and develop – both the exhilarating and the exasperating – was in many ways a falling into the ground.
Now I’ve arrived in a new space. My time initially is all used up chasing work to make it ready and safe for Mum to move in. Then I shall consider who it is I am to be in this space. How it is that my dormant kernel might regenerate and feed a multitude. It’s learning that who I was yesterday is not who I am to assume I am to be from today onwards. It is a new chapter, perhaps even a new book. While the character remains the same, the plots will change. I choose to abandon myself to God’s nutritious soil and await fresh growth that will be for the nourishment and enlightenment of others as much as myself.
QUESTION: What must die for you to change into the person God would have you be?
PRAYER: Lord, transform me through the renewing of my mind. Change me, even though I may find that hard.
