Be Still Know

Psalm 101:1-2 (NLT)

‘I will sing of your love and justice, Lord. I will praise you with songs. I will be careful to live a blameless life – when will you come to my aid? I will live a life of integrity in my own home.’

After the magnificent celebration of Easter, with its loud acclamations, I find it helpful to take the following week for some serious self-reflection. In deliberate moments of retreat in which I present myself wholly to God with a commitment to self-audit I come asking, ‘How am I to live in the light of the resurrection?’

For me the challenge is, which voices I choose to listen to. There are many sounds that fight to make themselves heard within my head. Stepping aside to enter into the silence that always precedes the clear voice of God, often merely increases both the number and diversity of such voices.

Within my heart there is also always the desire both for comfort and self-justification. I all too easily occupy the total landscape across which my eye moves. It is a mirage of my own making, reflecting selfish desires and ambitions that fill my head in their attempt to direct my daily decisions.

Each morning I must decide to attempt to destroy all the wicked in the land, as the Psalmist sings. It is to face the deceits within myself and find Jesus, full of grace and truth. It’s not lost on me that Mary waited in the garden. Her first thoughts were the agony of the loss of Jesus’ body and her inability to carry out her service of anointing his body. Then she saw her Lord and mistook him for the gardener. Yet she waited, questioned and eventually recognised his voice.

I also need, each day to seek the risen Lord. I need to delay my departure from the place of silence and recognise that I may not recognise God, for He may not appear in the same form. Yet, God’s voice is unmistakeable if I might be still, calm my racing brain and look beyond my own assumptions and earthy desires.

QUESTION: What other voices consistently get your attention?

PRAYER: Lord, please help to still my heart and mind so I may hear your voice afresh today.
