Be Still Know

Galatians 1:6 NLT

‘I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News.’

Over the years I have journeyed with my American friend Jeff Pratt. He has been with YWAM many years and established Axiom, a virtual monastic community whose members live out a rhythm of prayer and service in their locality. One of the things that has eluded me is the critical objective that might define Axiom. For me it is a loosely defined group of individuals motivated to different degrees to explore what is presented as Contemplative Activism. I am known as one of the originators yet get lost at times trying to lay hold of what I am in fact a part of.

This confusion of mine lies at the heart of our Christian faith. God has given clear parameters within which we are to live, yet not been too prescriptive over the detail. However, as we establish different approaches to our Christian faith we can all too easily take something that is expansive and inclusive and reduce it to a narrowly defined series of rules and regulations. When this happens, while it is so much easier to determine if someone is ‘sound’ or not, it sucks the very life of God out of our expressing Christian virtues throughout the earth.

When we look at Jesus’ own ministry we see little that is prescriptive. What we encounter are wonderful God-driven values that when implemented through obedience and trust in God yield a fruitful and fulfilling life, not just for me but for all those I share life with. The issue is that to live by Jesus’ values requires of me a level of trust where I know for certain that my security – material as much as spiritual – is safe with God alone. Here I wince somewhat. It is so much easier to validate my Christianity over and against a set of objective criteria than it is to live flexible and free within the broad boundedness of God’s revelation.

QUESTION: Are you comfortable living flexibly within God’s clear yet broad boundedness, or does it challenge your need to control?

PRAYER: Lord, may my identity, security and trust be only in you.
