Be Still Know
Isaiah 55:3 NLT
“Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. I will make an everlasting covenant with you. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.”
We have a little Chihuahua/Yorkie cross, who has many endearing features, as well as a few less likeable habits. Now, one of his most endearing is to put his head on one side as if paying the greatest attention to everything that is being said to him. In real terms, I think he is hoping to hear one of two critical words. The first of these is ‘walk’ and the second, unsurprisingly, is ‘dinner’.
No matter how often he might hear these words, he never tires of them, or indeed of listening attentively in anticipation. God invites us to approach him with our ear inclined toward him. This is so that we might attentively listen for his word into our life. God reminds us that he is not only risen and alive, but that he is also speaking specifically into each one of our lives.
It was Jesus who stated that we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. So often the struggle to put food on the table, keep a roof over our head and the like can become the dominant refrain of our life’s rhythm. We call out to God to meet these immediate daily needs – the bread of physical nourishment, while failing to make the time to listen to God’s personal word for our welfare – the bread of wholesome provision.
I have spoken before of just how wearing the process of daily living can become – earning to meet our own and our family’s practical needs. Yet, God’s whispered words of love, correction and direction alone enliven our very being. They stir the spirit within and raise hope. They alone provide the perspective that’s missing in our view on the world. For it is only with God that we are empowered to see with the eye of faith.
QUESTION: Consider your relationship with the Lord. What adjustments may be needed if there is insufficient opportunity to grow this relationship?.
PRAYER: Merciful Lord, I incline my ear to you. Turn my heart to you and open my soul. Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.
