Be Still Know
Isaiah 55:8 NLT
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,’ says the Lord. ‘ And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.”
My joy in the Oratory is to cook. I prep, cook and serve all the meals and gain many personal rewards from doing so. It is one aspect of my craftsmanship gift and gives me an undue amount of pleasure. However, occasionally someone will sit on a bar stool across from my preparation area and maintain a running commentary on alternative ways of prepping, seasoning and even cooking food. I choose to bake a fish, they explain that this type always tastes better fried. I serve Dauphinoise potatoes, they suggest roast might have been a better choice. My inner irritation I have learned to manage, yet it’s wearing.
I’ve also recently taking to meditating on the extent to which God mirrors my inner frustration every time I either choose to take responsibility myself in any situation without carefully consulting him, or when I adopt actions that seem good to me, yet have not been approved by the Holy Spirit. We are made to live in immediate proximity with God. The cross and resurrection have ensured that we are invited to live within the immediacy of God’s presence. No longer are we separated from the love and life of God.
As a result, I often find myself in a stand-up fight with God, since my experiences within life do not appear to match my perspective of how life is intended to be in my case. I fight against much which is, in fact, a grace gift from God, even if in the moment is presents a bitter pill to swallow. These may be bitter pills from the past or the turmoil of a current disturbance.
Take a moment to truly reflect upon Isaiah’s words, God’s ways are not our ways, nor God’s thoughts, our thoughts.
QUESTION: What disappointments are you nursing?
PRAYER: Lord God, I’m beginning to realise that doing it my way is not nearly as good as living your way. Help me live that way today.
