Be Still Know

John 6:27 NLT

But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.

I am grateful that today I am resilient to the power of the advertiser. There was a time as I matured when I was captivated by dreams of possessing all sorts of products. These were desired in part for what they were, yet more especially because of the status they promised to secure for me in front of my peers.

Some time back, I was involved in training some senior staff from an outsourcing company. They told me that they had a team who advised potential chief executives about the must-have items – Rolex watch, Montblanc pen etc – if they were to have any chance in securing a high-level appointment. Image can be reality!

Jesus, having sought the solace of silence after feeding the 5,000, now challenges the same crowd, once they’d found him, with their real motivation in pursuing him. It was because they had experienced full bellies. They now desired their everyday reality regularly changed by some form of divine magic, failing to distinguish between sign and substance. They grasped the external reality of God’s provision, the sign that demonstrated Jesus’ authority and integrity, yet failed to see the substantive reality which the sign pointed towards.

Becoming an effective CEO is about leading, inspiring, and caring for a business and its staff team, and has nothing to do with superficial image.

Once God has secured our attention through some meaningful intervention in our life, the work of the spirit is to draw our attention to consider the deeper purpose God has for our life on the earth. The Christian life is less about miracle than it is about mystery. Yet, so often it’s the miracle that captures our attention. Sadly, it’s the miracle we want to see repeated, rather than yearning to know more of the God who was responsible for the miracle.

QUESTION: Do you treat God as a provider of handouts, or do you desire to really know God better?

PRAYER: Father, your love and promises are worth more than earthy gold. Help me to store up treasure in heaven.
