Be Still Know

Matthew 22:37 NLT

Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord your God…’

Love is a word we instantly warm to and apparently understand. Yet, in reality it’s perhaps the most difficult emotion to find and to express. Hollywood has taken love and made it an icon for explicit sex. ‘Making love’ describes sexual relations, yet only the couple will know if it’s love-making or just sex.

Indeed, walking with Katey over her MS years, sexual relations of any kind were inappropriate from an early stage. Love had nothing to do with sex, yet still engaged our sexuality. It also covered a far wider range of actions and reactions that touched each one of us to the very depth of our being. In an age that finds comfort in applying objective measures to demonstrate the success of anything, love remains a mystery and immeasurable.

However, it is essential Jesus tells us, to love God. This lies at the heart of God’s greatest commandment. Love lies well beyond word and actions. It is intensely felt deep within the soul. No matter what distractions demand my attention, nothing can overcome the compelling need to love and to be loved. God invites us to discover a love that is stronger than death and demands our fullest attention, no matter what challenges life brings.

Love in my experience is something that we cannot set aside. It continues well beyond the passing of a loved one. It carries within it the power to destroy the very essence of who I am. Or in fact to transform me into one who can meet fortune and misfortune with equal equanimity. It’s not that misfortune doesn’t bite, tempt and test me to the limit. Rather it’s that the object of that love, in this case Christ himself, shines brighter than the most ferocious storm. God remains the true object of my affections, even though I apparently am consumed in my very attempts to reach towards God.

There are no objective measures for love. No one apart from me knows the truth or depth of my love for another. So to love with all my heart suggests there is nothing that can come between me and the object of that love, no matter the cost.

QUESTION: How do you show your love towards God?

PRAYER: Loving Lord, teach me what it means to love you.
