Be Still Know

John 15:4 NLT

‘Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.’

It is incredibly difficult to remain faithful. I cannot think how many hobbies I’ve adopted over the years and yet initial enthusiasm has waned and then been revitalised by some new attractive opportunity. With our world shrinking and our horizons expanding, the number of distractions and opportunities are overwhelming.

I often find Jesus’ analogies somewhat at odds with a 21st century that has urbanised and has replaced manual labour with technological solutions. First-century Palestine can come across as something of a rural idyll far removed from the stresses and strains of our contemporary lives. Yet, the joy of scripture is that it’s a living word and we are constantly to interrogate each scripture for the life-giving message it seeks to breathe into each one of us today.

Sadly, I have often been deaf to God’s instruction that I was to make my home in him. I recall that as a child I was more than content living in my family home, a little two-up and two-down in Sydenham, London. I also never considered all the details of life, since I accepted that Mum and Dad were looking after me. Indeed, they set me tasks, vacuuming, washing-up and working alongside my dad on his allotment. I gladly made my contribution and learned the skill of negotiating time with friends. It was a life of clear boundaries, defined responsibilities that increased with age, and space for fun.

On reflection, I have over many years proved something of a wayward child of God. I have gladly accepted the promised benefits, yet ducked out of my responsibilities, avoided direct dialogue and shinned down the drainpipe to get on with living my own life behind God’s back.

QUESTION: Where do you find yourself today? Resting in the arms of God, your true home, or playing hooky from God’s masterclass on life and how to navigate it effectively?

PRAYER: Lord, I would lead a fruitful life with purpose and meaning. Help me to find that and live that with you.
