Be Still Know

Psalm 25:4-5a (NLT)

‘Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me.’

I clearly remember one day at school standing completely bemused in the woodwork room. It dawned on me and my teacher at about the same time that carpentry was never going to be my area of excellence. My greatest success; a planned bedside table that ended life as a very useful cheese board! I found it impossible to use a plane in a straight line or craft joints effectively. I clearly grasped all the concepts involved in the project. I simply proved unable to execute them in practice.

Three times the psalmist calls upon God to instruct him in God’s ways. He says, ‘show me’, ‘point out the road’ and then ‘lead me’. This repetition speaks of completeness to the Jewish mind. So the psalmist desires to follow God completely with their life of worship and service. They no doubt comprehend what God desires conceptually, yet translating that into practical life proves elusive.

This appeal recognises there is a period of waiting, and perhaps experimentation. Following God is never a simple exercise in applied truth. It demands consideration of who I am and how I am wired. In many ways I am wired to resist God and, despite my profession of faith, I continue to live in a perverse way appearing to deny my vocal faith declarations.

This has proved frustrating and debilitating for me. My desire for God is unquestionable; my ability to live God’s way inadequate. The failures owe more to my instinctive assumption that I can somehow choose to live godly. My learning is that in this, as with everything else, I require God’s help.

So my appeal is to God for help – for teaching, for guiding, for being held to account – and my learning is that I must wait upon God for this to emerge. Godliness that is Godly living, for me is birthed in the quiet space to which I steal away with God, where I can be still and both know and be known.

QUESTION: To what extent do you rely on God’s help and to what extent do you rely on yourself?

PRAYER: Lord God, teach me, lead me, show me your way of life.
