Be Still Know
Luke 1:41 NLT
‘At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.’
Mary, arriving at her cousin’s, very quickly received all the confirmation she needed that the angel’s message was true. No sooner had she arrived but Elizabeth’s baby leapt in her womb in response to the presence of Jesus, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Jesus always makes his presence known.
I can remember two years into my Christian faith considering jacking it all in. I am a loyal servant-hearted guy by nature, and I had faithfully pushed through on quiet times, attended church and the various groups I became affiliated to. I had signed up for events and participated in the St Aldate’s Church mission over the summer. All I knew was that I was exhausted and not too sure if this Christianity was really making that much difference to the quality of either my life or my character. Then one ministry evening on the Holy Spirit, I discovered that missing dimension to my faith. I had been living Christian obedience out of my own earthbound resources and failed to draw upon God’s provision through the Holy Spirit. When prayed for, I had the most extraordinary encounter with God that lasted well over an hour. Before I left, I was closely questioned as to my ability to ride my motorbike home, such was the impact upon my general demeanour from this encounter.
Once awakened to God, there is no going back. Mary cannot terminate her pregnancy, Joseph hasn’t the luxury of divorcing his betrothed. Both are now at the start of a journey they will manage but never control. For control is something we voluntarily surrender to God when we accept his leadership and lordship. That was my first encounter of yielding to God and being bathed with the Holy Spirit – a vital step in my spiritual journey.
QUESTION: Are you living out of your own strength, or are you able to draw on the power of the Holy Spirit?
PRAYER: Lord, fill me again with your Spirit that I might live in that empowering presence.
