Be Still Know
John 15:10 NLT
‘When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.’
This week we have been looking at the reality of faithfulness. Jesus invites us to faithfully remain grafted into the Vine. The third and final critical requirement for faithfulness, after ‘Accepting’ and ‘Loving’, is ‘Doing’. Most of us want to start with the action, when it can never prove fruitful until and unless we have both accepted and recognised the love that lies at the heart of our circumstances.
Some critics have accused God of abandoning his Son upon a cross in an act of irresponsible parenthood. However, the reality of the walk from the Mount of Olives to Easter morn at the garden tomb was one of action in light of Jesus’ full acceptance of God’s will and discovering the love that lay at its very heart. Yet, Jesus’ actions were in response to a father’s request. Jesus both accepted and knew the love that lay at the heart of this redemptive story to which he was central.
The divine Son of God voluntarily encased himself within human flesh – but not as some sort of disguise so that he could move among us and share some insightful remarks about the creator. No! He demonstrated that we were now able to imitate God in the strength that Christ had fashioned for us. Just as God reached down to us in Christ with an invitation to follow, so now we, in our redeemed state, reach out to God for the strength to demonstrate the character of God within our own actions throughout our lives.
In our salvation we have each been delivered from sin, yet the weakness of the flesh continues to affect us. It is in the accepting and then the loving of God and God’s purpose that we are able to do the work of God upon the face of the earth, whatever we may endure.
QUESTION: What action is God inviting you to make in response to, or in spite of, the limitations you face?
PRAYER: Thank you, loving Father, that nothing can separate me from your love in Christ Jesus. Help me to share that same love with others.
