Be Still Know

Hebrews 12:2 NLT

Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honour beside God’s throne.

I am often troubled with thoughts about how much time I am wasting by simply sitting and contemplating God. It is easier to measure positive activity through measurable outcomes than by investment in meditation of the creator of all. Where Jesus is I shall discover fullness of life while revealing the reality of the One I worship and follow. Jesus is his own best testimony; I’m not required to embellish his reputation through my own heroic deeds.

Jesus is not only the pioneer of our faith, but equally he is the perfecter of it. If I desire a faith that enjoys all the required and desirable elements, qualities, and characteristics of Christ, then I am to ‘hang out’ with Jesus. There is no other way by which I might mature my faith than by gazing upon Christ, while seeking to emulate his life of humble service to both his Father and others.

Our anxiety-ridden culture, which only develops anxiety within each one of us the more we are enveloped by it, leads to an inner sense of hopelessness. No matter what mountain we apparently climb, we are confronted with further, more rugged and taller ranges ahead of us. Nothing appears substantial – job, family, community, identity – all are ruthlessly determined by external social, political and economic forces beyond our control. With all fixed points uprooted, we become human flotsam and jetsam, tossed about by the very act of living.

We must find a way to reinstate Christ as our fixed point, and build stability around him. Jesus becomes our anchor, and though flung around by life’s dramatic storms, we are never torn from our fixed point of reference – the One through whom we both receive life and then live our life. So hanging out with Jesus for its own sake is the only way we may expect to perfect our faith.

QUESTION: Have you lost your moorings in life? Hurled about by the storms of life, how do you discern God and re-establish your fixed point?

PRAYER: Lord God, it was your grace that saved me and it is your grace that will lead me home. Help me walk the Jesus way.
