Be Still Know

Genesis 12:1 NLT

The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you.’

I’m amazed that throughout life, God’s voice presents yet another fresh call. I feel as if my limbs are tiring, my temperament is becoming decidedly crabby and I am increasingly interested in the narrowest of horizons. But God isn’t finished with me yet! And so, like the patriarchs of old, I receive a clear visitation from God together with a fresh sense of call.

Such a visitation was less supernatural in appearance as practical and swift in execution. Mum expressed her desire to move in with us and we agreed. Within days out house was sold. The house Mum had selected on the Internet when showing her pictures of what might be suitable for us, was ours, Jayne’s commute slashed from 90 to ten minutes etc. I hadn’t got time to breathe, let alone complain to God about this disturbance to my cosy, well-regulated life!

Much like Abram (Abraham), I imagine, saying ‘yes’ created a series of life-changing events. I’m not laying claim to such significance for my move, but I am rebuked by God when I fail to acknowledge that there is divine purpose and significance in God’s call, realised through my obedience. How easy it is to become overfamiliar with the spiritual that we lose sight of the kingdom value in our small, yet important, steps of faithful obedience.

Abram might simply have dismissed the whole thing as a poor attempt to emulate his father, and years of living in Haran had offered little real sign of the hand of God’s blessing. He and Sarah’s desire for children remained unmet, and now age ensured childless they would remain. Little did Abram know that he stood on the very edge of the avalanche of God’s blessing – one simple ‘yes’ was all it took to start that avalanche moving!

QUESTION: Would you welcome a fresh call of God to follow him?

PRAYER: Lord, help me to trust and obey, when you say, ‘Follow me.’
