Be Still Know
Psalm 20:5 NLT
‘May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory and raise a victory banner in the name of our God. May the Lord answer all your prayers.’
Following a number of years working on religious liberty issues, I take a great interest in the oppression of religious groups, in particular, to the great suffering of the Jews, a subject that I looked at in depth while studying for my Masters in Jewish/Non-Jewish Relations. Since the tragedy experienced by Jews during World War Two, there is awareness of what gross inhumanity man is capable of towards his fellow man. Quite simply, once we reject we are made in God’s image, we dispense with our responsibility to love God with our whole heart and our neighbour as ourselves, and as a result, compassion collapses.
Today, as we wrestle with terror exercised in the name of religious conviction, it is wise to consider how we live our lives in the full knowledge that God is Lord of all.
Deliverance always follows captivity. The nature of captivity is that we are subject to somebody else’s rule. Their decision overwrites our own and we are subject to their every whim. Our walk with God reflects this same reality. Wherever and whenever we are subject to the rule of another, be it through political injustice or the power of sin, we become no more than slaves, robbed of our dignity and self-respect. God comes to liberate us, inviting us to choose his Lordship. While we become subject to his authority and kingdom rule, we know that this arises from the purest justice and can only ever be for our benefit. Its touchstone is Christ’s own voluntary captivity within our humanity to secure our eternal deliverance. Bruised we may be, yet we’re invited to celebrate.
QUESTION: Whose rule is your life under? Are you captive to something in this world – money, security, or self-fulfilment?
PRAYER: Saviour Lord, free me from the chains that hold me captive to anything but you. Set the captives free today, I pray.
