Be Still Know
Genesis 39:2-3 NLT
‘The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did.’
Currently we are following Joseph as he pursues his dream. Delivered from a dark, dank hole, he finds himself sold into the hands of Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh’s guard. Working diligently and honestly, Joseph progresses and Potiphar recognises that God is with Joseph. Yet, there are still hurdles in the way.
In every dream there is the danger that at the first hint of success, we move our focus from God who both sources and sustains that dream, to the reality of the dream itself. In doing so, we lose divine perspective and become minutely absorbed in both the immediate detail and demands of the dream. Without pausing and reconsidering God’s perspective, we can easily lose our way again. We fall down a hole of our own making.
Joseph’s success made him an attractive prospect for Potiphar’s wife. She made predatory sexual approaches and his constant refusals eventually led to her accusation of rape, her husband’s understandable rage at what appeared a wicked betrayal of his trust, and Joseph finding himself in yet another hole. And this despite running from the scene of temptation in obedience to God.
Yet, even though he kept his eyes on God, the spirit still put him back into a hole. Joseph appears neither resentful nor defeated. He accepts that discouraging though events appear, he is still keeping his eyes upon the prize and expects God to both be present in and deliver him from his current difficulty so that he might realise his God-inspired dream.
QUESTION: How good are you at remaining faithful in the ‘worst’, while faithfully anticipating the ‘better’?
PRAYER: Sovereign King, too often I look at my circumstances as evidence of your love; help me instead to look to you and your Son, Jesus.
