Be Still Know
Hebrews 10:22 NLT
Let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him.
The heart has historically been associated with the emotions. It is the seat of our feelings. We speak of those who are ruled by their heart, and the inference is that they are less than trustworthy as they are easily swayed by emotion. Yet, the heart is indeed the source of our affection for God. Our faith is not one established through philosophical and theological concept alone. It is not one that can stand purely upon the submission of an academic mind. This Christian faith of ours is about a personal and meaningful relationship, and the heart is engaged in all our relationships.
Scripture advises us to guard our hearts against deception and from destruction. God sees our heart and invites us keep a clear conscience, which is our inbuilt God navigation system. When we constantly push against this, we slowly desensitise to it and become ever less aware of what is wrong in God’s sight. Ultimately, we live quite comfortably outside of God’s ways, not because we have outgrown or abandoned them, but simply because we have turned away from the spirit’s wavelength and lost all of God’s programmes for the fruitful life.
As I awake each day, I place my hands over my heart and pray that it will remain soft and be able to empathise with the light of others. I ask God that I might feel as others feel, both to inform my prayers and to enable me to serve as Jesus served, with the best interests of others before me. This is how we remain pure in heart, those whom Jesus says are blessed and therefore happy, as well as intimately guided by conscience and compassion through each day.
Where your heart has been wounded through betrayal and deceit, ask God for healing and a fresh flow of hope to counter the despair that can so easily become the dominant flow from our life. God comes daily to refresh and renew us, and has promised a new heart for each one of us, one that is available to you for renewal each and every day.
QUESTION: How is the health of your heart?
PRAYER: Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.
