Be Still Know
John 6:66 NLT
At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him.
Something I’d never have foreseen in my early days as a Christian was just how many of my contemporaries would find it challenging to stay the course and walk within orthodox Christian belief for life. While I am the first to acknowledge that life has a habit of throwing a series of ‘curve balls’ at us, it is as we engage in wrestling with God that we discover much about our own frailties and contradictions as well as the demanding way we have chosen in entrusting ourselves into God’s hands. It is indeed ‘…a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God’ (Hebrews 10:31, NKJV).
Jesus, having moved from tangible bread that merely satisfies for a moment to the eternal bread which is his body, discovers that many of his followers to this point now melt away. The fact that faith in Christ is not a transactional arrangement that works in my favour is not the kind of spiritual leader many are seeking. While early in my Christian faith I did assume that somehow I was now untouchable, safe from all the troubles that plagued the lives of others, Jesus kindly yet firmly insisted that I grow up!
The well-worked phrases we find in the Gospels and the promises that flow from the lips of Jesus are compelling. Yet, the reality of obedience, or active listening as the word ‘obey’ means, invites each one of us to choose to seek for God actively in every circumstance through which life leads us. Even as I write this I’m conscious that compared to many of you, my difficulties are small. Yet I say with confidence, God’s grace is sufficient for each one of us in whatever circumstance we find ourselves. Remaining true to the historic Christian understanding of who God is and how God works provides a sure foundation on which to craft a faith for life.
QUESTION: Are there issues where you find following Jesus hard?
PRAYER: Lord Jesus, you remained true even to death on a cross – help me remain true to you even when that makes life uncomfortable.
