Be Still Know

Psalm 44:1 NLT

O God, we have heard it with our own ears – our ancestors have told us of all you did in their day, in days long ago

I love community, especially when we are all sitting around the meal table telling stories.

Where we have come from, the events that have shaped our life and the reasons we hold true to certain values and beliefs are essential in securing stability for any community. The biblical stories  we hear presented each week in our congregational gatherings is a central element in maintaining this narrative. We hear the stories how, when faced with extreme difficulty and danger, God delivers his faithful followers from a perilous fate. It is good to remind ourselves that in such situations God is the God of hope. That as God’s followers we can place confidence in God’s provision and care for us, within a larger canvas of his commitment to work out his kingdom purpose on the face of the earth.

A photograph captures a moment in time, but if we were standing behind the photographer our eye would take in a far greater scene than the camera captures. The incidents of God’s intervention are like photographs. They illustrate a moment in time, yet the broader historical events are excluded even though they form an equal part of the reality.

Never lose sight of the fact that there is a far larger set of circumstances which you are required to deal with daily. These ‘snapshot’ moments are for your encouragement, and an essential part of the community narrative. They keep faith alive when darker clouds circle and the sun disappears. To survive the storm we are invited to recall those snapshots that capture the hope that will carry us through.

QUESTION: What have been those snapshot moments that cause you to give thanks to God?

PRAYER: Lord God, you know the whole story from beginning to end. Help me find my place in your great story.
