Be Still Know

Psalm 1:6 (NLT)

‘For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.’

I’ve often spoken of faith as something that lies well beyond understanding. Faith is an active decision to place confidence in a person whose narrative, while constantly under attack, reveals the very essence of life, purpose and destiny. Once I have embraced the reality that God is both first cause and final end, the limits to my own understanding are no longer important.

For me the battle lies forever in the mind. However, the more I lean to my own understanding the more likely I am to worry for myself and chase around seeking to make meaning of my life both now and in into the future.

One blessing from my pursuit of the contemplative life is the ability to take time enjoying God in stillness and silence. Where once I feared solitude, I now discover that while others might see me alone, I know the companionship of my Lord.

It’s fair to say that life affords many challenges, each one a potential source of personal anxiety. While I remain equally subject to such anxiety and show all the symptoms of related stress from time to time, my true health can only be found as I practice what I declare I believe. Here the Psalmist nails it, ‘for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous’. The righteous are not those that do good, rather those that choose to submit to God. It’s not a blessing for the good amongst us; it’s a promise to all of us struggling in various ways to hold onto our faith commitment.

It’s easy to compare ourselves with the wicked, not those who necessarily do bad things but those who deliberately choose to exclude God. However, in time, the wicked will perish, their many deeds and actions shall fade over time and only the truth of God can remain for all time, and each one of us as witnesses of it and participators with Christ in eternity.

QUESTION: Reflect upon how challenging you find it to hand total control over to God.

PRAYER: Lord God, my life is secured for all time within your hands even when all things seem hard. Help me be faithful to you as you are daily faithful to me.
