Be Still Know
1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT
‘The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.’
While reassuring that there is no temptation from which the way of escape has not been provided by God, I confess to often failing to find the door onto this divine fire escape. Instead, I remain within the building and find myself consumed by the flames. I wake up with every intention and expectation faithfully to follow God, yet I am often hijacked by emotion or latent desire for something that inappropriately seizes my attention.
Jayne and I recently had a TV series [itals]Orange is the New Black[end itals] strongly recommended to us. It boasts a long list of screen and actors’ awards. We settled into the first episode and turned it off within 15 minutes. I was a little shell-shocked at the amount of naked flesh and full-on love scenes that greeted us. Now, I for one am unable to distinguish between art and porn; but the eye is, for me, a source of potentially lethal damage when it comes to considering sin.
So, I am responsible for taking practical steps to steer away from sin. It’s perpetual, unholy allure will persistently attempt to wear down my resolve. What’s more, when tired, upset, disappointed or angry, I am far more susceptible to its siren-like sound. So we pray daily in the Lord’s Prayer, ‘lead us not into temptation’ (Matthew 6:13, KJV), not as a passive surrender, but as an active declaration. My eyes must be constantly scanning the horizon for the way out. Whether it’s the off button on the TV, or a walk to the shops on other occasions, I need to develop strategies that will work for me.
God seeks to strengthen each of us to be best equipped to live the Christian life in challenging times, and often difficult personal circumstances. This is the school of God’s spirit; the way of growth through my changing attitude and deepening awareness of the reality of God in my life.
QUESTION: Take time to review your strategies to resist temptation.
PRAYER: Thank you for your faithful promise to help me flee from sin. Help me to endure until I find it.
